AMA MINUTES
MEETING OF OCT 18, 2004
Chairman Kevin Becker called the meeting to order at 7:32 p.m.
18 people were in attendance, representing 10 clubs.
Secretary’s Report: was read and accepted.
Treasurer’s Report:
General Fund: $1051.46
Emergency Fund: $2067.63
Charity Fund: $500
AMA Grant: $2000
The report was accepted.
Legislative Report: Nothing to report at this time. The
legislature is back next week. The Yield Right of Way bill and
Handlebar Height bill are in the works.
-The Federal Congress is adjourned until Nov 2nd. The Health
Insurance and Portability Act (HIPA) reform bill has not been
voted on. Congress is having a post election session and HIPA
should pass.
Larry S. reminds everyone to check your insurance. 20% of people
are not covered although they think they are - a loophole in the
law.
District 34 trying to pass legislation on the noise issue.
Currently it is motorcycle specific, but they want that out. CA,
IL and IO also want to change this.
ABATE has decibel meters and are doing checks every year.
Bill to raise fee for noise from $100 to $750, so this is not a
dead issue.
Prospector says we need to address this or the legislatures
will. They can and will start to confiscate things.
-MRF has a “call to action”. Call your Federal representative
and join the fight to get the Transportation Equity Act out of
committee. Mark Freer and Leonard Bosuell have a letter. Ask
Prospector re your local reps.
Prospector reported on the “Meeting of the Minds”. It was a
great experience. 43 states and Europe were represented from
about 450 people.
Insurance issues were discussed with lots of ideas coming from
other states.
Compared with other states, New York doesn’t seem to accomplish
much, probably from low involvement. “It was well worth the
trip!” You can get more info from Bob.
Denis and Mark reported on the AMA Congress in Ohio last week.
They work on rules for the AMA Rule book and sit on Advisory
committees. Denis has the information if you’re interested. The
logo was chosen by the Board after a graphic designer came up
with 3 or 4 different ones. The parts that stick out on the
sides represent handlebars, the M is for membership and
motorcycles and the shield is for protecting your rights to
ride.
Denis reported that John Hoover, the new CEO, from Kawasaki, is
a sharp individual with positive and good ideas.
Mark reported that there were some shake-ups down state in
District 34.
Clubs are chartered but 1%ers split them off after a year or
two. Some groups are so upset they have officially disbanded.
Mark also discussed District limits - i.e. for sanction events,
no else can have an event in the same district on that date. He
proposed that these limits might want to be removed so that AMA
members can go to other events and recruit for the AMA. People
receive benefits to sign up new members, $5 for new, $2 for
renewal. “Make it fun and they will come”
Mark challenged everyone to contribute $20 to the PAC
We can think about positive legislation - some states even have
“Two wheel tourism” offices. NYS has been unresponsive so far...
Denis reported he is the New England rep in case of emergency.
Larry M reported he was disappointed in the AMA Grassroots
Seminar he attended. Denis responded that AMA has a new staff
and that Hoover will be a good influence.
The Sanction meeting is December 4th at the Schenectady Holiday
Inn at 100 Nott Terrace. Call 518-393-4141 if you need
directions.
Kurt Wade is the new Albany/Schenectady Hog Rep now.
Kevin Becker proposed we work to improve and promote AMA on the
local level.
Go to your club and collect some photos of your AMA event along
with some captions and bring them to the next AMA meeting or
send them to me at 21B Dowling Rd., Albany, NY 12205 or via
email.
